STEPH’S NOTES:

Dr. Alice Wong has a beautiful vision to help Asian Americans with receiving the help they need, whether that is for mood disorders or issues with their cultural identities. I wanted to make her website as welcoming as she is, with a focus on having Asian American representation in her images, and a breathable, calm feeling. One of the roadblocks I encountered early on was balancing the amount of information and text, while also keeping the site easy to glean information from quickly for people encountering Prunella for the first time. I used shapes, highlighting, small and colorful icons, beautiful images, and strict visual hierarchies to really lead the eye down the page + keep the user engaged.

Upon doing some market research, I also discovered that many health professionals separate out their services into separate pages for SEO purposes. I recommended this to my client, and we decided to start off with a single page and grow into a separate page system a few months down the line.

Masumoto Farm

Song Song Studio Website and Branding Design in Los Angeles

SCOPE OF WORK:

Custom Illustrations

Merchandise (Tshirts) Design

INDUSTRY:

Food / Farm

STEPH’S NOTES:

Masumoto Family Farm is a third generation Japanese American farm in central California. They are primarily known for their peaches and nectarines, growing flavorful stone fruit that are favored by trendy kitchens and everything from breweries to ice cream shops. In celebration for their 20th year of Adopt A Tree, a program in which people can “adopt” a peach tree and come pick the fruit from their adopted tree, I illustrated and designed a few tshirts for Masumoto Family Farm.

Sometimes projects feel very personal to the clients, and I wanted to be both mindful of everything they dreamed of while also giving good, constructive feedback as the design professional. After doing market research, I created a few moodboards for the Masumoto family to look through. We chose one art style, and after a few days of ideating and illustrating, I presented my designs. The family asked for a few rounds of revisions, and instead of just executing the requested edits, I made sure to ask for their reasoning so that even the revisions would be collaborative. We ended up with something we both loved!

Doso Los Angeles

Song Song Studio Website and Branding Design in Los Angeles

SCOPE OF WORK:

Branding

Website Design

E-Commerce Set Up

Photography + Photo Editing

SEO Copywriting

INDUSTRY:

Fashion

STEPH’S NOTES:

DOSO is a sustainable and responsible clothing brand in Los Angeles. Everything is made by my Dad, who has 40 years of manufacturing experience, and his small team of seamstresses. The clothing is designed by me!

We started DOSO during the pandemic, and in the midst of a new job for myself. I didn’t have much time to spare for DOSO’s website until this year, and finally was able to give it the major design overhaul it needed.

Shopify has some limitations — one of my biggest frustrations has always been variations within products. Our previous template would show all the pictures for different colors on a single page, which looked confusing and messy. In lieu of a plugin that might slow down the entire site, I ended up manually separating out each color variant into its own page and then coded the site so that the other color swatches still appear on the related product.

Gen.G

Song Song Studio Website and Branding Design in Los Angeles

SCOPE OF WORK:

Website Design

Copyediting

Banner Design

Shopify Tutorials

INDUSTRY:

E-Sports

STEPH’S NOTES:

Gen.G is one of the premier esports organizations in the world. They requested a rush job of redesigning their website while adding in a landing page for their newly announced scholarship program. Their goal was to be able to edit small changes onto the website internally, such as adding in team members or updating the News section.

Within one week, I created seventeen pages (various landing pages, team pages, etc.). I sourced images, edited copy, designed custom icons, and created banner images for both desktop and mobile. We went through a few revisions, and then the site was successfully handed off and pushed live.

After hand off, I sent over several videos on how to make simple updates on their site.

Be Bright Coffee

Song Song Studio Website and Branding Design in Los Angeles

SCOPE OF WORK:

Illustrated Icons

Coffee Menu Design

Food Menu Design

Business Card Design

INDUSTRY:

Food / Beverage

STEPH’S NOTES:

My twenties were fueled by coffee, and this coffee was often purchased at the likes of Dulce Cafe in Little Tokyo and Copa Vida in Pasadena. Both of these cafes were at some point led by Frank La, who went on to create a coffee company and cafe called Be Bright.

I was initially asked to design icons for a coffee quiz that was the cornerstone for Be Bright’s coffee beans subscription site. Frank and his wife Michelle liked the geometric and playful icons I made for them, and this led to the creation of business cards, and later down the line, a menu to hang up on their Smorgasburg tent. Once they opened a brick and mortar cafe in Los Angeles, they asked me to make an expanded menu based off of the Smorgasburg menu.

Their initial branding deck did not include illustrations, so it was interesting to create an illustrative style that would fit in with their name and existing branding. I was also designing menus for other cafes at the time, so I read up on the psychology behind menu design and incorporated my findings in creating a menu that was intuitively organized and easy to read for the customer.

Picnic Poems

Song Song Studio Website and Branding Design in Los Angeles

SCOPE OF WORK:

Editorial Design

Website

Illustrations

INDUSTRY:

Poetry / Books

STEPH’S NOTES:

My pandemic hobby was to read hundreds of public domain poems. I marveled at how modern many of them sounded, despite being over a hundred years old. This musing evolved into an entire book that I designed, breathing new life into old poetry through modern typography and illustrations. The first issue, PICNIC POEMS, was a collection of spring time poetry. After that came FIRESIDE POEMS, and then a special edition for AAPI month called WE ARE ASIAN AMERICAN. My latest is LOVESTRUCK POEMS, released for Valentine’s Day.

Creating these books has been such a fun and wonderful exercise in research, writing, layouts, and becoming a typography wizard. It brings me such joy to sell these at pop-ups and see different people connect with these old poems.
